How to be faster in boxing?

If you are into combat sports, then you have to be as complete as possible to become the best version of yourself. Whether it's Thai boxing, English boxing, mma or any other combat sport, speed is an undeniable quality for a boxer.

This means you have to be fast and powerful at the same time.

Without speed, even if you are very powerful, you will eat the wind! The goal is to hit your opponent. By being faster, you will surprise your opponent and create a surprise effect to your advantage.

Getting fast doesn't mean striking at lightning speed, just being able to be nimble enough to hit your target.

Let's see together how to get faster in boxing .

Be relaxed for better boxing

This is the best advice I can give you! To be faster when you strike, the basis is to be released. If you are tense you will have a hard time hitting your opponent. Being released is even more important when you are under the blows of your opponent. So instinctively, we tighten up and stress under the blows, to become a better boxer, you have to learn to manage yourself and keep calm.

The best boxers keep their cool under all circumstances.

Being relaxed will also allow you to rebound at the right time and counterattack effectively.

So how do you work on your looseness for boxing?

The best way to work on your release is to put yourself in a real situation and do some sparring.

Learning to hit without muscle tension requires training (not surprisingly). When doing sparring sessions with your partner, keep in mind that you need to stay calm.

If you are training with a boxing friend, do attack-defense sessions. Ask him to attack you (without hurting you) and work on your release.

Use your whole body to get quick at boxing

To get faster while boxing , you need to master the technique that goes with it. When you strike, put your whole body in! A punch is not just a punch, there is all the rotation of the body, the power of the legs that goes with it.

To learn how to use your whole body you have to work on your sequences, and therefore your technique.

Work on your sequences to be faster

As Bruce Lee said, nothing is more effective than a mastered chain. Better to master a single shot perfectly than to know lots of ineffective shots. The sequences vary depending on your discipline. If we take the example of Thai boxing, a jab, hook and middle sequence may seem basic but mastered, it is a lethal weapon.

Everyone has their favorite sequences. The basics are the most effective, contrary to what we can sometimes hear.

You too have favorite combinations! Bet on these sequences, work them hundreds of thousands of times, until you master them perfectly.

Once a sequence is mastered, it becomes part of your muscle memory and becomes a reflex.

Perform punching bag sessions entirely dedicated to your routines. Hit as quickly as possible.

Here are three types of Thai boxing sequences:

  • Jab - Low kick - Middle
  • Jab - Jab - Direct
  • Jab - Hook - Low kick

Once you have determined your sequences, you have to work them so that they become instinctive You have to spend a lot of time doing your sequence, repeating it in shadowboxing, punching bag, sparring ect

Strengthen your muscles for boxing

To get faster at boxing, you also need to work your muscles. It’s not about weight training per se, but about doing specific exercises to improve your typing speed.

It's not about gaining bulk, like bodybuilders, but getting fit for boxing.

  • Overload: a good way to improve your speed

Overloading is a great way to build your speed. Take two dumbbells and shadow boxing with dumbbells in your hands. Once your fists get used to hitting with weights, without them you will be much faster.

  • Bodyweight training, specifically for boxing

Punch demands speed, precision and power. To improve your typing speed, perform bodyweight strength training, such as push-ups, but be explosive. Also combine heavy and light loads.

Doing sprint sessions is also very useful.

Finally, core strength, squats and jump rope are your best friends!

  • Training with a weighted vest

The weighted vest and resistance bands are great ways to improve your speed and punch.

The purpose of these tools is to force your limits with external resistance.

If you don't have any of this equipment at home, grab some water bottles and do some shadow boxing . And yes, even with water bottles you can improve your speed, no excuse for training!

Finally, don't hesitate while boxing!

Everything that has been said above is only valid if you don’t hesitate! When you put a blow, go for it (while having your guard obviously). Don’t hesitate, don’t split your punches, otherwise they will be ineffective.

You must have confidence in yourself!

Finally, being faster at boxing doesn't work in a separate way. You must above all work on your relaxation but also your technique. In boxing, your goal is to become as complete as possible. You'll never be the fastest or the most powerful, or the best puncher. But it’s all, along with your strengths, that will make you a formidable boxer.
